Violence Scars Holiday Weekend

Police and fire crews were busy over a violent weekend in the metro.

First came the fireworks and then came the emergency calls as the yellow tape began to roll out.

In just three days there were two shootings, two stabbings, and a variety of other violent acts.

It didn't end there. Two young men were shot at 36th and Pratt on Sunday afternoon. Both are now recovering in the hospital.

One neighbor, Angela Haynie, said she's fed up with the violence. “We are disappointed that you don't have anything to do but to shoot at people,” she said. “Can you not find a job? And if not, can you not go to school, get your education and do something better than hurt other people?"

There were also two hit-and-runs incidents involving small children. The children were not seriously hurt. A 4-year-old was hit in Bellevue on Sunday. Police say 53-year-old Linda Ehlers didn't stop after hitting the boy. She’s facing charges.

On Saturday, near 16th and Vinton, a 2-year-old was hit. The person who hit him is still on the loose. Witnesses describe the vehicle involved as a black Chevy Impala or Monte Carlo. If you can help police, call Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP or you can use the link on our Crime Stoppers page.
