A candlelight vigil to remember the victims of domestic violence will take place Thursday evening on the steps of the Douglas County Courthouse.

The Domestic Violence Coordinating Council’s Hope Advisory Council, Hopes Guiding Hand and Generation Hope are working together to organize the vigil which will start at 8:00 p.m.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and in honor of the victims and survivors, the community is asked to stand for those who have lost their lives or loved ones to domestic violence, the ones that cannot speak up due to retribution and shame, and for the children who are exposed to the violence and are often the forgotten victims.

“Our community must have an effective response to domestic violence which emphasizes core support services for victims and a community willing to work collaboratively to end abuse. Building safe homes and communities requires access to safe shelter, housing, law enforcement protection, access to justice, and economic opportunity. We have this in Omaha with our coordinated community response team, whose job it is to hold offenders accountable and help victims stay safer. Our community must believe and support victims of abuse,” said Tara L. Muir, DVCC Executive Director.

WOWT's own Malorie Maddox will kick-off the night followed by Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine and survivors Heather Duhachek and Liz Jones. Mayor Jim Suttle will present a proclamation as well. The evening will convene with a moment of silence to honor all victims of domestic violence.

Participants can begin to arrive at 7:30 p.m. The vigil will start promptly at 8:00 p.m. and will end at 9:00 p.m.

The Domestic Violence Coordinating Council of Douglas County and the Omaha metropolitan area is a nonprofit organization coordinating the community response to domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. The DVCC was founded in 1996 and recently celebrated 15 years of bringing hope, healing and justice to victims.
