Communities around Nebraska are celebrating Veterans Day, commemorating the event with everything from school programs to free meals at restaurants for those who've served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The nation is set to celebrate Veterans Day on Sunday. The federal observance of the holiday is on Monday.

Gov. Dave Heineman and Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy are marking the holiday at different events around the state. Heineman will give remarks Monday night at the Veteran's Day Gala and Banquet just southwest of Omaha.

Sheehy will speak at the Sandy Creek Public Schools Veterans Day program Monday in Fairfield, then participate in Grand Island's annual Veterans Day Parade.

The DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge near Blair is offering free admission through Monday to honor military veterans.
