One man was shot and another pistol-whipped in the head during an attempted robbery in Omaha Friday night.
Two armed men got into a home near South 34th and W streets around 11:45 p.m. A fight broke out during which 22-year-old Jose Nunez was shot in the foot and his 18-year-old brother Anthony Nunez was assaulted.
Jose was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and Anthony was treated at the scene.
The suspects fled without taking anything. Officers at the scene told Channel 6 News parts of the victims' stories did not match.
"It's just sad because you can't even be safe in your own house,” said Cynthia Toledo, a friend and neighbor of the victims. “I'm more sad because they went after two little kids."
Toledo said Anthony was taking out the trash when he saw two men approach. “He overheard them, when they said they should attack him, by the time he turned up, they had guns to his head." She said the suspects forced Anthony to the door and tricked his brother Jose into opening it.
After the confrontation with the brothers, Toledo said the suspects spotted witnesses inside, twin 12-year-olds. "They saw that the twins had seen them, the two intruders, so they turned around and started shooting at them and they had to flee the house running and they were covering their head. They even said that they saw the fire coming out of the gun."
Toledo is still scared, but said the neighborhood is a close-knit one. “But the good thing is, is that like our neighbors are always there for each other, so that's the good thing, but…”
