Jake Burnside is making leaps and bounds in his recovery at Creighton Alegent Health. His condition has been upgraded to fair.
Burnside was injured when the 66' Mustang he was riding in crashed in early June near Fremont. Tyler Walling, Trey Hansen and Jackson Blick, all of Fremont, were killed in the crash.
Burnside endured a 10 hour surgery on Thursday and it was very successful. Doctors used eight metal plates and 40 screws on his facial bones. Another surgery for a broken collarbone went well also.
According to his parents, "At this time, he's walked from his bed to a chair in his room and Wednesday night, he was reading the sports section of the newspaper. He's doing word recognition exercises with the staff here and last night, he was able to write the words 'I love you."
His family hopes he will be able to move to a rehab facility in the next week.
They continue to thank the community for the support, prayers and visits and ask that everyone keep the families of Jackson Blick, Trey Hansen and Tyler Walling in their thoughts and prayers.
