A judge set bond at ten percent of $750,000 for the woman accused of shooting a paramedic, and herself, inside an ambulance.

Twenty-four-year-old Justine Dubois was in a wheel chair while in court Tuesday morning.

Her preliminary hearing is set for July 30th.

She faces charges of felony assault, making terroristic threats, use of a weapon, possession of a gun by a prohibited person, theft by receiving and being a fugitive from Sarpy County.

On July 1, police were called to 48th and L Streets to investigate a stolen vehicle. Its owner told officers the suspect was inside a store. Officers arrested and handcuffed the suspect, Dubois. She was searched and was placed in the backseat of a police car. While in the cruiser, Dubois appeared to be having a seizure. Police called for a medic unit and removed the handcuffs due to her apparent medical distress.

The ambulance arrived and Dubois was checked. Her vital signs were normal so she was asked if she wanted to be taken to the hospital. She said she did so Dubois was placed in the rescue squad without handcuffs as both police and paramedics didn’t think she was a threat as she was being cooperative.

While en route to the Nebraska Medical Center, Dubois unbuckled herself from the gurney, stood up and pointed a gun at the paramedic, who yelled “gun.” A struggle ensued and two shots were fired as the driver was in the process of pulling over to the side of the road at 42nd and Center. A “help a firefighter, shots fired” call went out over the radio.

The paramedic suffered a superficial wound to his abdomen and Dubois was struck in the leg.
