University Of Nebraska Teams With StratCom For Research Center

The University of Nebraska has made an arrangement with the Defense Department to conduct research that will support U.S. Strategic Command's various military missions.

U.S. Strategic Command or StratCom is based at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue. Besides nuclear weapons command and control, StratCom missions include space and missile defense for all branches of the U.S. military.

The university says it will join 13 other institutions in developing a university-affiliated research center. The center will support StratCom in several areas, including nuclear detection and forensics, detection of chemical and biological weapons and space, cyber and telecommunications law.

The research center will draw from staff resources at all four NU campuses.

The initial defense contract award could reach $84 million over the next five years.
