WOWT NBC Omaha is proud to be a partner in this year's United Way of the Midlands campaign. Our own Serese Cole emceed Tuesday’s kickoff of the annual fundraising effort.
The goal this year is to raise more than $23 million.
It's money that will help tens of thousands in the Heartland.
United Way of the Midlands interim president Shawna Forsberg said, “You know, the most beautiful thing about our community is how many people are willing to get involved. We work with over 800 companies during the campaign, and 70,000 donors help us make this work for our community. It's a tremendous community served and we're so pleased to have this event here today."
The United Way is also launching two new programs this year. The first is helping kids be classroom ready, providing out-of-school support to give students a place to practice what they've learned.
The second is to be workforce ready. They are dedicated to helping teens and young adults master skills to get and keep a job.
