Uninsured Driver Wrecks Man's Life

An Omaha man is trying to get his life back together after an uninsured driver sent him to the hospital for months. His road to recovery has been a slow one.

Eight percent of Nebraska drivers are uninsured. That translates into 111,000 drivers statewide. “All of a sudden I got out of my truck and had my back turned and I wake up on the pavement,” says Cliff Flott. “I didn't know that I was hit."

What happened near 43rd and Charles last August has dominated the life of Cliff Flott. It was 8:30 a.m. and he was getting out of his truck to trim a tree, his business for 40 years, when police say a distracted and uninsured driver smashed into him. “Ran over the leg and broke the ribs on this side."

The 64-year-old showed us his X-rays and all the metal that now holds him together. “That's the pelvis, there's a big screw in there. It must have hit a nerve because I have a dropped foot now. I never thought about being mad at her because it would probably take longer to heal if I was mad."

Flott may have forgiven, but he wants the driver, 46-year-old Stephanie Underwood, to learn a lesson from his ordeal. “I know this girl doesn't have money. They say why don't you sue, you can't sue someone who doesn't have anything. To me, she should learn a lesson, like do community work or go to the hospital for six months and have to work with patients. Do something."

Since walking is a struggle, Flott can't trim trees and keep his company going. He's fortunate to be alive, but he just doesn't understand how tens of thousands of people drive every day around here without insurance.

Underwood goes on trial next month. She pleaded not guilty to reckless driving and no proof of insurance.

Flott’s family is putting on a benefit for him at St. Joan of Arc at 75th and Vinton on Saturday, April 13th from 6-10 p.m. Cost is $12 for an adult dinner and $6 for a child's dinner. There will also be a raffle and auction to help with medical bills.
