The biggest winners in this year's legislative session may be Nebraska veterans.

Lawmakers have forged ahead this year with proposals to give former service members tax breaks, in-state tuition benefits and a hiring preference for some who apply for government jobs. Many of the benefits extend to family members and spouses.

Paul Cohen of the Military Officers Association of America says lawmakers have made substantial progress in making Nebraska attractive to service members who are leaving the military, but more can be done to help them transition into the workforce.

Sen. Sue Crawford of Bellevue says many of the proposals arose out of a legislative study that looked at ways to recruit and retain military retirees.
