Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Joey Miller said the man is 74-year-old Thomas K. Schlender of Raymond, Nebraska.
Miller said five shell casings were found on the interstate after the shooting early Tuesday morning in Panola County. It was still not clear if the shots were fired from another vehicle or from the side of the interstate.
Schlender's car crashed into a divider in the median. He was alone in the car and no other motorists were hurt. The shooting happened Tuesday about 1:40 a.m.
