UNO has hit a new milestone. After breaking ground back in October of 2012, the Community Engagement Center is up and running.
The idea behind the building is to build the university's community service outreach.
Community organizations have space there, the University's Service Learning Academy will be housed there, and all other service opportunities will stem from the new space.
University representatives say that as far as they know, the building is the only freestanding comprehensive engagement-focused building in the country.
Sara Woods, the Assistant to the Senior Vice-Chancellor for Community Engagement, said, “It really enables us to expand what we're doing on campus as far as community engagement. It strengthens our service learning activities. It strengthens our volunteerism activities.”
A resource center in the building is being dedicated to Jessica Lutton Bedient who was killed by a drunk driver in 2010. She was heavily involved in the university's community engagement activities.
