The Omaha City Council unanimously voted to advance project to build a new UNO arena Tuesday. The project, known as UNO Nebraska Village, would be situated southwest of 64th Avenue & West Center Road.
Tuesday’s vote included an approval of the preliminary plat for the project. Specific zoning and funding issues will be taken up later. The project calls for the city to contribute about $6 million of the cost on infrastructure especially improving street access to the arena.
The plan is for the arena to be host to the UNO hockey, men’s & women’s basketball, and volleyball teams. It would also include space for education and gatherings.
During Tuesday’s discussion, council members frequently approved the notion that it is important to make UNO a premiere university for the city and that the arena project is a part of it. Chancellor Dr. John Christensen mentioned that it's his goal to have 20,000 students enrolled by the year 2020.
