Lincoln Police say a 20-year old UNL student is in the hospital recovering after the assault.
It happened Sunday morning at 14th and "P" streets around 12:30 a.m.
They say the victim and a couple friends were surrounded by a bigger group of young men.
The victim and one of the suspects exchanged words.
That's when the victim was punched and knocked to the ground.
One of the suspects was carrying a motorcycle helmet and proceeded to strike the victim several times in the face with it.
The victim suffered severe facial fractures, including a broken nose.
An officer described it as looking like the victim no longer had a cheekbone.
The victim's friends took him to Bryan LGH West, which is when police were notified of the assault.
Officers are still searching for suspects in this case.
It does not appear to be gang-related.
