The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has found a way to preserve at least the exterior of a 99-year-old state fair building while still constructing two floors of high-tech research space inside.

Officials announced the new plan for renovation of the Industrial Arts Building on Thursday.

UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman says he hopes historical preservationists, who objected to previous plans to demolish the building, will accept this.

The primary developer says the Industrial Arts Building would house research space and mechanical equipment on the first floor and greenhouse space on the second floor. No price tag for the project was announced.

The university is in the midst of converting the former state
fairgrounds into a new research and technology park officials are calling UNL's Innovation Campus.
