Omaha police say two women were attacked within minutes of each other Thursday morning in the area of Park Avenue and Leavenworth between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m.
Carmen Torres tells Channel 6 News that she and her nephew saw a naked woman running down the middle of the road at 31st and Leavenworth yelling that she had been sexually assaulted. “It was horrible listening to her screams, yelling out for help, telling someone she had been raped."
Carmen had just parked her car near the intersection when they saw the woman in the middle of the street. “This girl, she was naked, completely naked. I was shocked because we don't normally see this.”
Torres says they rolled down their windows to see if the woman was okay, but by that time someone in a white van stopped and saw the woman. The victim was able to get inside the van and police were alerted.
Just 30 minutes earlier, there was an attempted sexual assault near 30th and Marcy. An eyewitness tells Channel 6 News a woman was walking her dog when she was approached by a man. The witness said the man then grabbed the woman around the neck from behind in a choke hold, but the woman was able to fight off her attacker and get away.
Lisa Chudomelka lives in the neighborhood and says she learned about the assault from a crime alert sent out by the Leavenworth Neighborhood Association. “I think if I was that woman I would be greatly disturbed. Living a block-and-a-half away, it really was just a reminder.
Channel 6 News has contacted police several times, but not much information has been released pending an investigation into each assault.
