Two girls have reported that a man in a pickup tried to entice them in the past two days, however investigators have not yet connected the cases.
One incident was reported by an 11-year-old on Monday just outside of Blair. She told investigators that a man in a blue pickup approached her. He claimed to have a gun and told her to get in. The girl immediately ran away and hid.
The suspect was described as a white male between 30-40 years old with blond or light brown hair and a mustache. He was driving a blue, four-door pickup with a red stripe. The truck had a loud exhaust, a dent in the tailgate and Iowa license plates.
A similar incident was reported by a girl in Monona County, Iowa who told investigators a man in a blue pickup tried to entice her into his truck Tuesday night near the Mapleton city park. The suspect was described as a white man, about 30 years old with dark hair, a ponytail and a goatee. Anyone with information is asked to call (712) 433-1414.
These cases and other recent events are causing a stir among many folks. Some are learning to defend against the unexpected.
Angie Jenson is learning self-defense to be ready for those unexpected moments. “You can’t always count on somebody else to be there. I am in charge of myself, nobody else is.”
The recent discovery of the three Cleveland women held captive for 10 years only adds to Jenson’s motivation. “I travel here and there for work by myself sometimes, I have two small children, my husband is not always home, not that I have ever felt unsafe, but I didn’t want to be unprepared.“
Krav Maga instructor Mike Kassebaum says crime is always evolving, so people should, too. “I really agree that everyone should defend themselves. We do fire drills, we do tornado drills, but we don’t really spend a lot of time on self-defense drills.”
One of the things that you really want to do is just be aware of your surroundings, that way you can be ready for the unexpected. “I am glad that I’m more prepared than some people,” said Jenson. “Not 100 percent sure of my abilities, I haven’t been doing this that long, but I do feel that I can defend myself a lot better than I could three months ago.”
