Two men were arrested following a gunshot and chase in Council Bluffs Wednesday morning.
Police say two men were in the drive-thru lane of the Walgreens near East Broadway and Frank Street just before 1 a.m. when a pickup with two men inside pulled up beside them and an argument ensued.
When the first two men drove away, the pickup followed them to the intersection of Harmony and Benton streets where they heard a loud bang and the pickup took off. When the men got out to check their car they saw a bullet hole in the trunk. One of the men, 34-year-old Kent Hendricks of Council Bluffs, suffered an abrasion to his leg caused by shrapnel or fragments from the driver's seat. He did not require medical attention.
Police spotted the truck in the 200 block of Orchard Avenue and tried to pull it over, but the driver wouldn't stop. He lost control near 25th Street and West Broadway. Officers found two rifles in the pickup, one with its serial number defaced. A shotgun, believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, was found on the Broadway viaduct after it had apparently been thrown from the truck during the pursuit.
The driver, 26-year-old Luke Bird of Council Bluffs, was arrested for attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, assault while participating in a felony, intimidation with a weapon, tampering with evidence, driving while barred, possession of marijuana, felony eluding and for two outstanding misdemeanor warrants.
Thirty-three-year-old Dustin Boetel of Council Bluffs was arrested for attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a weapon, assault while participating in a felony, intimidation with a weapon and possession of methamphetamine.
