Police say the suspects arrested following a pursuit through a south Omaha neighborhood early Thursday morning may be tied to a number of other crimes.
Officers were advised around 12:30 a.m. that a wanted man was in a Jeep driving in the area of 50th and L streets. Police located the vehicle (later determined to be stolen) and tried to stop the driver, who refused to pull over and took off. The police helicopter was called in to assist in the search.
“I was in the living room watching TV and first I saw the spotlights, they were coming through the window and I had the front door open and the helicopter kept going around,” said Phillip Opdyke.
“So I went outside and there’s all kinds of cops on the street and there’s a helicopter floating around, it was pretty nuts,” said Bob Kment.
Just before 1 a.m., 911 received a call that two people were hiding near 42nd and H streets. Officers found 19-year-old Christopher Roach of Omaha in a truck. He had a warrant and was booked for possession of stolen property, felony flight to avoid arrest, operating a vehicle during suspension, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, having fictitious license plates and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police continued to search a yard at 42nd and H and located 32-year-old Jeremy Torpy of Omaha, believed to have been spotted in the Jeep earlier. He ran into a neighboring yard and climbed onto the roof of a house. Torpy eventually came down from the roof and was taken into custody. He was booked for robbery, flight to avoid arrest, theft by unlawful taking, willful reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
“I got scared, I was in the bathroom talking to 911 whispering, then the police officers came,” said Angie Johnson. “They picked up a car in the neighbor’s driveway and in my back yard they pulled people out of my shed and out of my doll house and off of my next door neighbor’s roof.”
Twenty-five-year-old Makayla Secord of Omaha was also found in the area. She had a felony warrant and was booked for possession of a controlled substance and receiving a stolen item.
Officers got in formation that two others who had been with Torpy were in a car in the area of 48th and L streets. Timothy Poff was found and booked for a misdemeanor warrant. The other person was questioned and released.
