Tubby the gorilla was back home at the Henry Doorly Zoo on Thursday. The 432-pound silverback gorilla had extensive dental surgery after apparently getting into a scuffle with another gorilla.
The 27-year-old seemed to like the attention. Because of the injury, Tubby is currently on a lettuce greens and biscuits diet. Zoo staff said he seemed none the worse for wear.
"He is doing great," said the zoo's Julie Napier. "His activity and appetite are completely normal. He is not showing any signs of discomfort. He is completely off all medication right now so he is recovering beautifully."
Napier is the senior veterinarian at the Henry Doorly Zoo and said she is further encouraged to see Tubby chewing on both sides of his mouth. The three teeth were not replaced.
