One property owner describes it as a bad haircut. An Omaha Public Power District contractor trims limbs from several trees for about a block along an Omaha street.
The branches are cut to prevent power outages during storms. But a tenant in an apartment complex with three trees trimmed said Omaha Public Power could have taken less off the sides. Jeff Okrina said, “Obviously they’re not concerned about the cosmetics of the trees anymore. They’re kind of an eyesore now. They were beautiful trees providing shade for the building and now they’re butchered.”
However Mike Jones with OPPD said arborists and a professional trimming crew are involved in careful cutting of limbs. Jones said “To look at the tree and see what is the healthiest way to cut it so the tree will continue to thrive and a lot of limbs will grow back.” It may not look the best but it’s the healthiest in the long run for the tree.”
Jones said OPPD is not cutting trees as often, trimming from every three to five years.
