Tree Trim Upsets Homeowner

Losing your electricity would be dangerous on a cold night like this. That's why Omaha public power district trims branches year round to prevent outages.

A Sarpy county homeowner says the trimmers went too far.
On a cold day Chris Noyes has warm memories of a shady backyard. Chris says, "It was this expansive umbrella of a tree."

But that canopy won't be as broad this summer since OPPD cut a large limb the district says caused brief outages on a power line serving a large number of customers.

Jodi Baker with OPPD says, "We certainly empathize with customers who have concerns over the way a tree looks once it is trimmed but we are required to maintain a certain clearance."

Chris had been notified of tree trimming to protect electric service but says when he left home the crew cut more than he expected.

The homeowner says, " I was unhappy, I was frustrated because you can't exactly nail the limb back up."

OPPD trim crews are supervised by licensed arborists who know where to cut without hurting the tree in the long run. But Chris wonders about damage to his property value.

And if you look at these volunteer trees back here you can see limbs intertwined with the power line yet those trees and limbs remain.

OPPD says the branches of other trees aren't causing power interruptions but will be trimmed later this year. Chris Noyes says, "Why is this no endangering the power lines but the limb that wasn't even near the power line is endangering it."

Jodi Baker with OPPD says,”That trunk that was cut looks like it was aiming directly toward the power line." OPPD says the power line has to be protected for years to come. But the Chris Noyes says crews didn't have to cut this deep

OPPD tree trimmers hang notifications on doors several days before crews arrive in a neighborhood and on it there's a number property owners can call for questions about how much of a tree will be cut.
