Omaha's newest recreational trail will soon connect two other trail and provide easier access across the central part of town.
Half of the South Omaha Trail is complete and connects to the Keystone Trail near Karen Park. It runs primarily east-west and ends near 45th and Dayton. Eventually the trail will connect to the Field Club Trail near 35th and Vinton. Construction on that segment is expected to begin next year.
Doug Settlemier enjoys using the Field Club Trail over his lunch hour, but has to turn around where the trail ends at Vinton Street. He looks forward to the day when he can just keep walking.
"I would like to go even further on my walks over the lunch hours," says Settlemier. "I could go another ten or fifteen minutes if it was going further."
Crystal Rhoades enjoys riding her bike on the newly completed portion of the South Omaha Trail.
"This time of year has been particularly beautiful," Rhoades says. "And this piece of trail has been particularly beautiful. There's a lot of really deep ravines. And you get to see deer and bunnies. And the foliage is beautiful."
