Sex offenders in Douglas County now have another place to register. In addition to the Douglas County Sheriff’s office on 156th and Maple, sex offenders can register on the first floor of the Douglas County Correction Center downtown at 1616 Leavenworth.
The downtown location is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Officials hope the second site will increase compliance to 100 percent.
All sex offenders are listed on a statewide registry along with their crimes and locations. Many people are learning how valuable the Web site can be.
The site shows you where the sex offenders are located and they’re located all across Omaha.
Karen Struck is the mother of three. She knows about the sex offender Web site. It helped her to choose a neighborhood for her family.
“We were living in Benson at the time and we were surprised to see all the little red dots that popped up,” she said. “And we just recently purchased a house and we looked on the Web site before we moved just to kind of see in our neighborhood what showed up.”
Karen and her husband work hard to protect their children. They noticed sex offenders are living all across the city and it surprised her.
“Yes, I mean you hear about it but actually visually see it and to see exactly where they were.”
As administrator for Sword of the Spirit Christian School, Susan Mackrill is responsible for dozens of students. She knows there is a sex offender in her area so she keeps an eye out and she encourages parents to do the same.
She said, “Because of being so busy today I think many parents that don’t, mean to, but they think we're OK because we live in Omaha, Nebraska.”
Susan believes we should all be aware of who is living around us, especially with children now walking back and forth to school.
“I think that children are all of our responsibility no matter if we're school personnel or just people in the neighborhood we need to protect them.”
