Toys For Tots Falling Short Of Goal

The U.S. Marine Corps is in trouble and needs our help. The Toys for Tots Campaign appears to be falling well short of the goal.

There is still time to donate and one little Lincoln girl is leading the charge.

This is what you expect a Marine to look and sound like. Barking out orders and getting the job done. Everyone doing their job to make sure the objective is met.

But those same Marines say they are in trouble the need for toys this year is outpacing contributions.

That's where 8-year-old Teghan Metcalf comes in.

Teghan Metcalf says, "I thought it was an awesome idea."

For the second birthday in a row the shy third grader is donating all of her gifts to the Toys for Tots Campaign.

Teghan Metcalf says, "I kind of feel happy inside and proud of myself for giving Toys for Tots."

But too few people are joining Teghan.

The Marines have accepted thousands of toys this year but they are falling short of their goal of a toy for every child in need. In fact they are about 2,000 toys short.

Capt. Brandon Cooley says, "We're not trying to supplement Christmas we're trying to bring Christmas for these children so every little bit helps and we are definitely in that crunch time now and it is local communities helping local families."

Toys collected for kids are already being shipped out but the Marines hope that people follow Teghan's example and give a little of themselves to make up the gap between supply and need.

Teghan's mom says it is just her daughter's personality.

Amanda Metcalf says, "I sometimes don't realize how great it is because it is just what we do it is what she does and I don't realize the importance of it until other people kind of say 'wow, what a great kid.'"

The toy drop off boxes have been picked up but you can still drop off a toy at the Marine facility at 30th and Laurel or you can go to their website at and find the Omaha tab.

Captain Cooley figures at an average of $10 per toy they need about $20,000 to make sure every kid has a Christmas this year.
