The Toys for Tots campaign is gearing up for the season, preparing to put some smiles on the faces of kids in the heartland.
Residents of the Omaha-Council Bluffs area are encouraged to donate new and unwrapped toys for youngsters. The items should be appropriate for infants and children up to age 14.
The USMC Reserve asks that people consider toys that they would buy for their own children or young relatives. Toys for Tots will not distribute gifts of food.
Toy donations will be accepted through Monday, December 9, 2013 in Toys for Tots boxes at a wide variety of retail stores and businesses, including area Walmart, Hy-Vee, Bakers, Walgreens, Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores. Members of the reserve unit will then pick up toys from drop-off sites and sort them.
On December 18 and 19, the USMC Reserve will deliver toys to the local agencies that are taking family applications.
Those applications from families are being taken through December 6, 2013. Families that want to apply for toys should call the 2-1-1 center at United Way to find the application site closest to them. (2-1-1 is available 24 hours a day.)
