The recall involves about 45,000 Highlander Hybrid and 36,000 Lexus RX 400h vehicles.
The recalled models were built in 2006 and 2007.
Toyota says the vehicles have a problem with their hybrid systems.
It is now gathering replacement parts.
Toyota expects to send owners notification by mid July of this year.
