Officials have issued a health alert for toxic blue-green algae in a part of Lake McConaughy near the Nebraska Panhandle.
The state Department of Health and Human Services announced Friday that the alert only affects the Martin Bay portion of Lake McConaughy. Samples from that area were above the state's health alert threshold for the toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.
Martin Bay is located at the northeast end of Lake McConaughy. It will be closed to swimming during the alert, though recreational boating and fishing are permitted.
The alert will continue in the area for at least two more weeks as it undergoes testing.
