Tough Road Ahead For Father With Seven Children

David and Barbara Montgomery met 18 years ago. David described it as love at first sight, "like we had always known each, one of those magical moments."

They married and together had seven children.

“A pretty tight family, pretty close,” said David in an interview with Channel 6 News.

Then suddenly, there was a drastic development for the family when Barbara suffered a heart attack last Christmas.

Barbara never left the hospital. After surgery she lay in a coma until she died on Palm Sunday.

Now the whole dynamic for the family has changed. Barbara was the bread winner because David is in constant pain with polyneuropathy, a nerve condition that leaves him unable to work.

His disability income is not enough to support seven children ranging in age from six to sixteen.

The two oldest children, David 16 and Mary 15, have stepped up to help.

“It’s a lot more responsibility watching my siblings,” said David.

Mary said, “When I think of the future I wonder what kind of job I’m going to get, how will I complete school. Everything is just so hard, keeping up everyday.”

Help for the Montgomery family has come from relatives and neighbors.

And the Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a dinner/auction on Saturday April 20 at St. James Parish. The event runs from 4pm to 8pm.

Monetary donations can be made at any Bank of the West location to the “Barbara Montgomery Fund.”

“Both Barbara and I had great faith in God,” David said. “There's a reason and a purpose for all of this, I don't see it right now, but I believe in the long run this is for everyone's good and it's hard for me to say that."
