The Nebraska State Patrol says a westbound car traveling too fast for the slick road conditions went out of control, crossed the median and was struck by an eastbound truck just after 8 a.m.
The driver of the car, 42-year-old Ranulfo Martinez Lopez, his 39-year-old wife Maria Fernandez and their 6-year-old daughter Amy were killed. The driver of the semi, 60-year-old Yves LaTour of Quebec, Canada, was not injured.
The eastbound lanes of I-80 between Utica and Beaver Crossing were closed for more than five hours during the investigation and cleanup. Westbound lanes were closed for approximately two hours.
