An infant was killed and three people critically injured in a Council Bluffs house fire Saturday night.
The blaze broke out just before 8 p.m. at the residence near North 8th and Mill streets. Neighbors who saw smoke tried to rescue the residents, but they could not get inside.
Firefighters found 6-month-old Mayci Colburn-Lerette dead in the living room. Three-year-old Gerad Lerette, 30-year-old Jeremiah Lerette and 70-year-old Terese Lerette were taken to Alegent Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, then transferred to Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln for treatment.
Firefighters notified police after discovering "suspicious" items inside the house. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire and whether those items were a factor.
