Thousands lined up in front of the Open Door Mission on Saturday in order to sign up for Project Santa. “This is a much bigger response than we anticipated," said an event organizer.
Project Santa is where families can sign up to receive free toys for their kids the week before Christmas. Candace Gregory, president of the Open Door Mission, said they didn’t open the doors until 10 a.m., but people had been waiting in line since 6:30 a.m.
“I think it really shows that there is a true need in our community and many of these families are just struggling to make ends meet. A gallon of gas and a gallon of milk are the same price and on top of that having to provide Christmas for your family can be just the little bit to send you over the edge from being able to pay your rent on time or to keep your heat or lights on."
Organizers said some people stood in line for hours to make sure their kids would receive the toys. They are able to provide around 6,000 kids toys for Christmas.
Gregory said this wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the support of the community. The Open Door Mission is always accepting donations. For more information, click on the link below.
