Thieves have been taking aim at metro auto businesses, hitting three within a matter of days.
Two are right next door to each other. Ideal and Precision Auto Body are located just south of the interstate, off Dahlman Avenue. The third, Miller Auto Sales, is located on the northwest corner of 84th and l streets.
For the past seven months, Hector Pena has been hard at work at the helm of Ideal Auto Body. At some point between last Wednesday night and early Friday morning, thieves smashed into Pena's shop through a window. Once inside, the bandits got their hands on two of Pena's paint guns.
They also took a pair of security cameras and the DVR. All the keys for the cars in the shop have since been remade.
Pena said, “We had to get all this equipment, like the alarm system, out of our own pocket. We've got to replace a bunch of tools that they took. It's kind of devastating that they did that."
Out-of-pocket money also paid for new, reinforced windows.
Across the lot, Rich Nanfito's shop was also hit; the second time in about a year.
“Second time, it gets old,” Nanfito said. “It is isolated down here. The police go by, up and down, but back in here you can't see nothing."
Inside, the race car driver showed us the damage. A window was knocked out where thieves took a motorcycle but somehow missed a very expensive rear axle piece.
In the end, both Nanfito and Pena will pick up the pieces, install new security and keep a closer watch on things.
