There is a thief among us..
And he may have hit an all-time low.
According to police reports, churches are being hit by a copper thief and they want it to stop.
Surveillance cameras might help solve at least one of the crimes.
"Thou shall not steal" is a top ten no no at St. Margaret Mary Church and School near 61st and Dodge.
But someone ignored the commandment and helped themselves to copper down spouts
"It's disgusting. It's unbelievable that you would steal the down spouts off anything let along a church or a school," school principal Peggy Grennan said.
This isn't the first time that someone has ripped off the fifty year old down spouts, and it might not be the only church this thief has hit.
According to police records, First Christian Church just a few blocks away was also the victim of a copper theft 20 minutes later on the same day.
Believe it or not it was last Sunday when the thief hit.
A security camera at St. Margaret Mary school watched the man case the place during mass.
"During the noon mass the day he ended up stealing down spouts from down here walking around the church and Rainer Center and down through here," Grennan said.
The security camera got pictures of the suspect, the suspect vehicle, even his license plate number.
School officials have even taped the pictures to the remaining down spouts hopefully to discourage the thief.
"Just to let him know we know who he is we know what his license plate number is and we've notified the police," Grennan said.
So far no arrest have been made.
