The automatic spending cuts known as The Sequester in our nation’s capitol have been blamed for a decision to cancel a major air show later this year. Channel 6 News is digging deeper. We checked into whether it might affect this year’s Offutt Air Show.

We heard from Colonel John T. Rauch, Commander of the 55th Wing. He released the following statement:

"At this time we are still planning on holding our annual open house and air show on Aug. 24-25. However, as we move forward into March and receive further guidance from Air Combat Command and the Air Force in regards to sequestration and the continuing resolution, there is a distinct possibility that this could change. We realize how important this event is to the local community and the base, so as of right now we are continuing the planning process in hopes of once again hosting one of the best open houses and air shows in the Heartland."

Much of the attention on sequestration has gone to cuts in defense spending. Earlier this week, organizers of an annual air show in Indianapolis announced they are canceling this year’s show which was set for June. That’s because the Blue Angels, which were scheduled to appear, could end up being grounded. Organizers say they could not move forward with that uncertainty.

There have been other reports that the budget cuts could end flyovers at sporting events. USA Today reported that the Thunderbirds were expected to stand down effective April 1. That could mean their flyover at the Daytona 500 last Sunday could have been their last for a while.
