"He was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."
Beth didn't want her face shown on camera. Friday, she had a run-in with a scary seller on Craigslist.
Beth says, "I think that was his plan all along. I think he came with a gun to get money from somebody on Craigslist."
They met in the Westroads parking lot by Granite City. It was in the middle of the afternoon, and it was busy.
Beth says she even spotted a security guard near by. She texted her mother before she met with the seller to let her know she was there.
Beth was there to check out a Pontiac G6 she had seen on Craigslist. She had bought two cars before on the auction site and never had any problems.
Beth says, "Then I got there and the car was really, really dirty and I was like this is kind of weird."
Beth and the seller even took the car for ten minute test drive. She walked around the car and checked out the tires.
Beth says, "I actually got in the backseat and was looking at the headroom, then I said I would like to look at the title."
The seller handed Beth a title, to a Mercedez Benz. It wasn't the Pontiac she was looking at. She questioned him. That's when it got ugly.
"He turned around, like pretended he was getting in the glove department then he turned around with the pistol."
Malorie Maddox asks, "How close was the gun to your face?"
Beth says, "About a foot away. He said this is what's going to happen...you're going to give me money. I said I don't have any money. He said...then get out, get out, get out."
Beth is used to high stress situations. She served nine months in Afghanistan. She never expected to come inches from a gun in a busy mall parking lot.
Beth says, "I don't want to feel like I can't do stuff anymore. I don't want to feel like I can't go by myself somewhere."
The suspect is described as about 23 years old, 5-foot-6 with a slim build wearing gold wire-framed glasses, having reddish or blond hair/goatee, last seen wearing a red baseball cap, white T-shirt and blue jeans.
