This year, more than ever, families in need are getting a chance to celebrate the holidays. But thanks to the help of organizations around the Heartland stepping up to make a difference, those families will have a meal to celebrate the holiday.

Bob Copple has been inside this truck all afternoon, waiting for people like Imelda Hill to stop by and pick up her Thanksgiving meal.

“I’m very excited about it,” said Hill.

Hill will be cooking for eight kids and five grand kids this week.

“I'm going to go home and start getting ready,” said Hill.

Volunteers from Alegant Health Immanuel Medical Center and Lutheran Family Services helped distribute boxes of Thanksgiving meal ingredients. The contents were donated by employees of Immanuel, 125 meals worth.

“It makes you appreciate having the opportunity to spend it with your own family. Also give people an opportunity to maybe cook some things that they don't normally eat,” said Bob Copple.

But that isn't the only place you'll find people helping people. Just two days after the Open Door Mission’s “Drumstick on Wheels” program and they are in their warehouse it filling with toys.

“365 days, 24 hours, 7 days a week, we're open. So it's like today is just another day. We're getting ready for our Christmas. Our Project Santa program will serve more than 6000 children,” said President and CEO Candace Gregory.

The Open Door Mission is also preparing to serve more than 1700 people on Thanksgiving Day. And they are taking volunteers to help sort and organize toys for Project Santa, on December 1st and 2nd.

WOWT is also asking for you help during our Holiday Food Drive on December 10th and Midtown Crossing from 10:00 am to noon. You can drop off canned foods and non perishable food items that will be donated to Saint Vincent de Paul.
