Thanksgiving Dinner For 500 Families In Need

In three days many of us will be sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends.

But there are plenty of people in the metro area that wouldn't have Thanksgiving dinner without a little help.

The need is increasing across the heartland.

Hundreds waited in line at St. Martin de Porres at 21st & Emmet and the Juan Diego Center near 31st & F for two hours this morning.

Catholic Charities provided turkey and all the fixings, enough to feed a family of five.

It's a Thanksgiving dinner that otherwise may not happen for 500 Omaha families.

Mary Moffatt was at the north location.

"It's just great for those who really can't afford a turkey and its just a blessing," she said. 'I mean there are people here that are truly homeless, truly need it."

Catholic Charities Program Director Marilyn Sims says this is just a start.

Sims sees the need increasing as the lines continue to get a little longer.

"Every year we see at least a 10-15% increase in those families that are needy and we hear this first hand that they either lost their jobs or these circumstances caused to be in our lines for the first time," Sims said.

Laura DeWitt is one of those first time visitors. She recently got sick and lost her job. Now, she lives on a fixed income.

"Normally I wouldn't have done this,' she said. "I'd go to a friend's house but since my son's home and he's out of work right now, I've got to do what I can and I'm really appreciative of being able to come and get a nice dinner. We're going to have a really nice Thanksgiving this year."

The average family spends about $49 on Thanksgiving dinner.

Catholic Charities is making a difference in the lives of nearly 500 area families for about $30 each.

Catholic Charities and other organizations that help feed the needy this time of year can always use our help.

Monetary donations are always needed as are volunteers to help prepare and distribute the food bags.
