Tenants Receive Eviction Notice For Christmas

A shock came in the mail for occupants of a midtown apartment complex and it wasn’t a Christmas card. They’ll have to spend the holiday season finding another place to live.

“It’s not easy for me to get around." Twenty days before Christmas and Theresa May is packing boxes instead of wrapping boxes. “We won't have Christmas, we have to find a place to live.”

A California investor bought the three-building Cranberry Apartments at 40th and Cass and before renovating, about 10 remaining tenants, including families, must move by the end of the month. “We'll find them something else very close to there and definitely take care of them,” says Dave Paladino of Landmark Management. “Our whole thing is about the tenants and we want to do everything to keep them happy."

The buildings need more than paint with cracks and empty fire extinguisher cabinets. Rental agreements are terminated as of December 31st, so some tenants question the timing of the evictions forced by the planned renovations.

Luis Sons must pack before Christmas. “That's a short time, about 30 days for moving."

May, who has lived there six years, says tenants deserve a 90-day notice. “I can't come up with a deposit and rent in one fell swoop and there's a lot of people in this apartment complex like me on fixed income.”

Management promises to work with displaced tenants. “If they need for us to strike a special deal with them because of unique circumstances, we can do that,” says Paladino.

The tenants don't expect “A Christmas Carol” ending. “Scrooge Christmas,” says May.

Landmark says all the tenants are on month-to-month leases, so the evictions are being handled by the book.
