Tenant Wants Landlord To Fix Problems

An Omaha man is at his wits end trying to get his landlord to do some repairs to his apartment.

So he called Channel Six News asking for a Fact Finders Investigation.

For the second time in a month, Cory Montgomery's place was ransacked. His TV and stereo gone.

"I got broken in to last night," he said. "They (even) stole all my food out of my refrigerator."

Montgomery says it's because his apartment building is not secure.

He says his landlord isn't doing proper repairs.

"I've been trying to be understanding with him and everything and i feel that I'm out of options," he said. I pay my rent just like everybody else."

Montgomery moved in to this apartment near 38th and Grand Avenue in July.

Since then, getting repairs done has been a struggle.

Windows are rotten and won't stay up.

Counter tops are coming up.

Broken door frames.

"There's duct tape holding the window in," he said. "The top stove comes on but the oven doesn't work."

Montgomery took pictures showing the damage when he moved in and the repairs made have been less than quality.

He's constantly called the property owner and even sent letters listing the repairs.

"I've been nice for so long and I feel that this is outright wrong and disrespectful," he said.

Much of the damage here was done before Montgomery moved in, with a verbal agreement from the owner that repairs would be done.

"I feel that he's not going to get it done," he said.

So Montgomery called the city and inspectors discovered more problems. Documentation received by Fact Finders lists 24 pages of repairs.

Like an extremely uneven kitchen floor.

Montgomery doesn't want to move. He simply says he wants a nice place to live.

"I want everything in working order like everybody else like its supposed to be when you move into a place," he said.

The property owner, Gregory Johnson, says he will do all of the repairs necessary to get the apartment up to code.

Johnson says he offered to move Montgomery to another apartment building at the same price, but the tenant turned down the offer.
