Update: Teenager Home Recovering From Gunshot Wounds

A 13-year-old girl is recovering after being shot while she slept early Thursday morning. Two suspects are in custody.

Nearly every day at 6 o’clock, Terije Carter could be found practicing with her drill team but on Thursday she was home with her aunt mending from gunfire, still visibly in shock and in pain.

Briauna Al-Muhaimin said, “My niece is well. She bounced back quick. She's a soldier. She's back in the house. She's in the house. She's recovered - she's recovering."

Terije was sleeping at a friend’s house near 40th and Browne Street. Gunfire erupted at 3:30 Thursday morning. The bullets came through the wall and hit Terije. Two other teens were in there as well.

Terije was taken to the hospital for treatment of wounds to her ear and neck.

Briauna said, “They don't have any enemies. They're teenagers, you know what I mean. It's sad. Enough is enough."

Terije’s drill coach, David Broadway, is also in disbelief and asked what many have asked. “Just kind of makes you wonder - like, why?"

Authorities have booked 21-year-old Russell Perry and a 17-year-old male for use of a gun to commit a felony and 1st-degree assault.

Briauna says she's grateful to police for working so quickly and now they want Terije back out there to enjoy her summer - like a kid.

"We're going to move on with our lives," the victim’s aunt said.

Terije’s drill team will be in a parade this weekend and her aunt says her niece is sad that she won't be able to step. Her drill team coach says they will perform with extra enthusiasm for her.
