Investigators have identified the young woman injured in a traffic accident near 183rd and Blondo Monday morning as 16-year-old Sarah A. Barmettler.
Authorities were called to the scene, just before 8:30 Monday morning. Dispatchers reported a car had crashed into a tree.
When first responders arrived, they reported back to dispatchers that a teenage girl needed to be extricated from the vehicle. Rescue crews worked for 20 minutes to get her out.
She was taken to the hospital via medical helicopter, officials at the scene say she was able to communicate with first responders.
It is believed Miss Barmettler was heading to school and icy conditions played a role in the crash.
The quick splash of freezing rain followed by powdery snow led to dozens of crashes in the metro. They included one involving a semi at Interstates 80 and 680. We're told there were no injuries in the wreck.
As a result of all the crashes, Omaha police stopped answering non-injury accident calls for a period of about three hours.
