Sentencing Delayed For Teen's Killer

Sentencing was delayed Wednesday morning for Justin Lenz, who plead guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his former girlfriend, 16-year-old Melanie Koontz.

The judge granted a 90-day delay after Lenz's attorney argued the state may not be able to provide adequate rehabilitation and treatment for his client, citing the Nikko Jenkins case. Jenkins, accused of killing four people last summer, has said despite asking for help while in prison, he never received mental health treatment.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine called the claim by Lenz's attorney "outrageous."

Koontz was a freshman at Omaha's Benson High School when she found strangled to death under a bridge near North 80th and Blondo in May 2012.
