Thousands of Nebraskans statewide will lace up their walking shoes, get up from behind their desks and take a 30-minute walk as part of National Walk @ Lunch Day on Wednesday, April 27.
All Nebraska employers and organizations are encouraged to participate. They can visit www.bcbsne.com to register and learn more about the walk.
National Walk @ Lunch Day is a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) event in its fourth year.
To date, 4,000 people from 45 businesses representing 30 cities across the state have registered. The event drew 13,000 walkers in 2010—with several companies in Nebraska planning lunchtime walk events to promote healthy living.
Each organization is asked to promote and coordinate its own walk on April 27. While some businesses treat the walk as a large event, most simply encourage employees to walk around or near their facility on their own over the lunch hour. At the least, the walk can serve as a reminder for employees to get up occasionally from their desks and move around.
“National Walk @ Lunch Day is such a successful event because businesses and their employees realize how simple and effective an activity like walking can be,” said Kathy Nellor, wellness business consultant at BCBSNE. “Organizations can use the event to launch a wellness program or they often incorporate it into an existing health program.”
In addition to www.bcbsne.com, organizations can learn more and discuss the event on Facebook, www.facebook.com/walkatlunchnebraska.
