Teaching Kids To Live With Asthma

Summer camp is supposed to be fun and educational, but one area camp is teaching kids how to cope with an affliction that hinders them.

Camp Kitaki in Cass County is where kids are learning skills that will improve their health for years to come.

It may look like a typical summer camp, but this one's a little different.

Every child here shares the same thing...they all suffer from moderate to severe asthma.

"It can hold you back for some things."

This is Ashley Hudson's fifth year here at Camp Superkids.

The camp has helped her cope with her asthma.

"I used to be really self-conscious of using my medication in front of people and now it's just another thing I do," she said.

The camp is a fun and educational experience for these kids, for example, teaching them what triggers their asthma.

"You can be going along and come in contact with something in the environment and be stopped," Camp Director Patrick Foster said. "We really do try to push that idea that you're normal, do x-y-z follow your asthma action plan take your medication avoid the things you're allergic to."

Ashley says coming to camp with an open mind helps.

"It's going to be educational but that doesn't mean its going to be boring," she said. "I mean camp is one of the highlights of my year."

Ashley says the realization that others suffer from the same affliction automatically bonds these kids.

And in case of emergency, a complete medical staff of nurses, a respiratory therapist and a physician are on duty 24/7.

The main goal of Camp Superkids is to teach these kids that's it's okay to be an asthmatic and that they can live healthy lives.

"We give kids a chance to learn more about their asthma," Foster said.

This is the 36th year of Camp Superkids. Funding is through donations, foundations and grants to the American Lung Association.
