A teacher at Anderson Grove Elementary School in the Papillion-La Vista School District is in the honors spotlight.
Alysia Augustus will receive the Presidential Award for Mathematics; recognized for being the best in the country.
To win, Alysia had to record her lesson plan and then write a paper about her strategies. The eight-year teacher stood out by showing that her young students have a discussion while learning and have a good grasp of math concepts.
She said she's dedicated to teaching math well because she struggled with math when she was a child.
“The more that I can do to help kids become more successful in math and feeling confident and not just wanting to give up, that is what my goal is and that's what brings me to work every day."
Augustus will travel to Washington D.C. this weekend to receive her award.
