Bond was set Wednesday at 10 percent of $25,000 for a Johnson County Central High School Spanish teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old student.

Twenty-four-year-old Carrie Miller of Tecumseh, Nebraska is charged with sexual assault and enticement through electronic devices. According to court documents, Miller is accused of having sexual contact with the boy approximately 50-60 times in the fall of 2012.

The probable cause affidavit indicates the two routinely exchanged text messages, graphic photographs and inappropriate conversations.

Several of the alleged sexual encounters took place in Nemaha County at an abandoned farmstead and were often arranged by cell phone. Because of this, Miller faces additional charges in Nemaha County. Her next court appearance is set for February 26th.

Deputy Johnson County Attorney Rick Smith said accusations of this nature rarely happen in the area. "This is the first time I've heard of it in my 32 years."

The Johnson County Central Superintendent refused to comment, saying the school is dealing with a personnel issue.

Miller was married to a Lincoln man at the time of the alleged sexual assaults. She was married in September 2011 and the couple filed for divorce in February 2013.

Smith said it's fairly common for accusations like this to come to light long after they may have happened. "Sometimes people are embarrassed by it, just don't want to get in trouble or get someone else in trouble. There are any number of reasons that they don't get reported right away to law enforcement. But really, from 2012 to early 2014 is a pretty short window compared to some that we see."

"Shock, absolute shock,” said Pat McKinney, grandparent of a Johnson County Public School student, regarding the case. "I couldn't believe it. Children at this age are easily manipulated and easily led into doing something."

McKinney has lived in Tecumseh for nearly 40 years. “You never know in a small community that something like this is going to happen.”
