A taxing weekend for Omaha's largest taxi service. Two drivers are victims of hit and run crashes.
Thanks to an air bag Jeff Jones fared better than his taxi after crashing into a pickup. Jones says, " He pulled right in front of me and then when I was coming to,he was taking off."
The hit and run driver made an illegal left turn into Jeff's path at 50th and Dodge late Friday night. Taxi driver Jones says, "He didn't even bother to get out of his truck to check on me."
The next night another driver escaped injury when a vehicle hit his taxi and drove away . Neither cab carried a fare but the separate hit and run crashes will likely cost self insured happy cab more than twenty thousand dollars.
The operations manager for Happy Cab John Davis says, "it would be speculation but I would say that they were either drunk or didn't have insurance or maybe both."
That's why Happy Cab will push the legislature for tougher penalties on drivers caught without insurance. But Jeff Jones says its about more than justice.
He says, " Be a man, stand up and take responsibility."
The taxi driver describes the hit and run vehicle as a dark colored newer model Chevy or GMC pickup with a topper. It has obvious damage on the front right side. Happy Cab is offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest of the hit and run driver.
