A suspected drunk driver who drove on a closed section of new highway almost came to a dead end. He slammed into the right read end of a parked grader.
The crash happened sometime overnight on highway 370 near Gretna Monday morning. it was not discovered until about 7am when construction workers came to work. They found the smashed SUV empty.
Lt Russ Zeeb said the driver walked about four blocks to his parents home in Gretna. Zeeb said 28 year old Daniel Beaman was cited for suspected DUI. He said the driver was then taken by his mother to a hospital for treatment of a broken hand, broken sternum and possible head injury.
Zeeb said deputies estimated if the SUV had hit the grader a few feet to the left the driver likely would have been killed.
The road grader sustained more than $10,000 damage. The battery from the SUV was found about 75 feet down the new pavement from the crash scene.
