A foot chase in the Cole Creek area near Blondo Street Wednesday morning ended with a suspect back in custody.
A woman had called police to say her son attacked her. The suspect was handcuffed behind his back and being escorted out of a house near 80th and Blondo when he elbowed an officer, causing her to collapse. He was able to break free and run off before being recaptured four blocks away.
“He's energized and adrenalized and I'm sure he's fearing going back to jail,” said Omaha Police Sgt. Jeff Baker. “There may be some undiagnosed mental illness here, too. He indicated to us when we talked to him in the car that he was bipolar, so there could be a lot of other things going on."
Janet Grassmick witnessed the young man being arrested in her back yard. “He was young, no shoes. He had no shoes on. Just, he was probably scared. I'm thinking with all of the cops it was something way worse.”
